What is Portal?

The Portal project focuses on creating a deployment kit to assist a college to successfully establish the infrastructure needed to support a truly scalable portal solution. This solution will be based on the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) technology. This platform would immediately make available a collaborative environment that will be used by students, faculty and staff. From this foundation a college can build a robust "electronic form" routing process utilizing electronic signatures and basic work flow processes. This would feed into a document management center that assists in grappling with electronic data retention issues as well as legal discovery orders.

In addition, the college could make available existing learning management solutions designed to run on MOSS or integrate their existing solutions such as Blackboard or Moodle. Finally, as the Simplified Sign on (SSO) project moves forward, SSO could be utilized to allow for cross-college authentication between portals, thus opening the door for student collaboration across the state regardless of the college they are actually enrolled in. MOSS can also be a platform to embed the CIS administrative application, creating a single interface for all to work from.
